Twentieth Week of 2010

And blessed be Your name

when I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness

Blessed be Your name

And blessed be Your name

on the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering

Blessed be Your name

You give and take away
You give and take away

Some of the words from Matt Redman's "Blessed Be Your Name" make me incredibly happy. Happy in that our proper praise and worship of God don't depend on the circumstances in our lives, for we don't worship Him to get what we want or need. For then we would degrade God to an ATM machine, a means to an end and essentially a creation of our own—which is impossible.

We are not naïve as to needlessly invite sufferings into our lives, for we still strive to be alert as a fox and practice prudence in our decisions. But we stand ready to suffer, though our body and heart should struggle against it, for we know that the road to growth is paved with suffering and we do not want to remain infants, feeding on spiritual milk.

The idea of delayed gratification and patience—they all tie together.
